About this site
In this RNA site we applied many of the features and possiblities that have been developed, assembled and tested since the project started in 2005. Underneath the site is a RDF framework storing the reference structures which in their turn take care of a big part of the findability of the content. For instance, having reference structures and content metadata stored in RDF makes things like facet navigation possible. Reference structures, content and content metadata can easily be managed by editorial staff in the content management system. And there are several faciltites "underwater" to make maintenance of these things an easy job for developers. So, lots of interesting things for end users, site managers and developers. For the end user there are several features that make it easy to find one's way through the content, no matter how much the number of webpages, articles and deeplinks will grow:
- full text search
- tree navigation (soon)
- facet navigation
- lemma network
The site manager will be mainly interested in features which make it easy to add content without too much overhead caused by maintenance of links between content and reference network:
- easy division between navigation-bound content and free-findable content
- full featured content management system for internal editorial staff
- light content production system for external editorial pool (soon)
- dynamic updating between content metadata and reference network
For developers it's nice to know that most features in this site are realised by integrating open source components:
- content management - Umbraco (see also www.umbraco.org)
- RDF framework - Sesame (see also www.openrdf.org)
- facet navigation - Spectacle (see also www.aduna-software.com)
- search engine - Lucene (see also lucene.apache.org)
- search server - Solr (see also lucene.apache.org/solr)
