Case study: Army Museum
Legermuseum | Korte Geer 1, Delft | http://www.legermuseum.nl
By displaying its collection, the Legermuseum (Army Museum) intends to show everyone, young or old, the significance of the Dutch army in the Netherlands during the course of the centuries.
Activities
The museum realises this objective by means of a permanent exposition, a semi-permanent children's exhibition as well as annual theme exhibitions. It also organises lectures, guided tours, educational packages, classes at the museum, excursions, birthday parties and so on. The Legermuseum's website provides information on the museum, its opening hours and its current offering of exhibitions and activities.
Collection
The collection of the Legermuseum comprises approximately 500,000 objects, ranging from tanks and missiles, uniforms and weaponry to books, handwritings, magazines, engravings and photographs. As of late, visitors are able to view the museum's offering online by accessing the Collectie Informatie Centrum (Collection Information Centre or CIC) on the website.Knowledge sharing
To digitally share its information, the Legermuseum uses existing reference material, such as a military dictionary, a pictorial encyclopaedia, keyword lists and a thesaurus. All this material contains a large number of keywords and descriptions. As part of the RNA project, these keywords and descriptions are transformed into "automated" structured lists, after which they can be interlinked. Thus, a "new" network is created from existing reference material that is ideally suited for digital knowledge sharing.
